Must-Visit Destinations by Car in Milos

Milos has earned its place between the most popular and visited islands of the Cyclades for good reason. Hiring a car while visiting is the perfect way to unlock all the little secret spots, remote beaches and picturesque villages to truly see what the fuss is all about.

Beaches

While public transportation does offer more routes than normal during the summer, it is still definitely a limited way of moving around the island. Aside from the bigger villages, the capital of the island, Adamas, and critical spots like the airport and the port, the rest of Milos remains mostly unreachable without renting a car. And that is especially true for some of its most gorgeous beaches.

Plathiena

A favorite amongst visitors, Plathiena beach combines the soft sand with a secluded scenery that makes for a relaxing morning under the sun.

Only 4 km north of Plaka, it is quite easy to find and it is partly-organized, meaning you will find at least some basic amenities offered on the beach, like beach-beds and umbrellas to rent. It is important to point out that it is also wheelchair accessible.

Parking is available only 15 m away from the beach.

Paleochori Beach

Near its namesake village, this beach is vibrant with volcanic formations framing it and its unique seabed making for a memorable experience. The consistency of the seabed in those previously volcanic areas make warm bubbles emerge from the sand now and then.

The beach is located in such a spot that the famous Cycladic winds do not disturb the visitors, something that makes it an ideal location for families with children.

It is mostly an organized beach, with some of the shore extending to provide small reprieves of unorganized spots, mainly towards the left and right sides of the shore.

Kapros & Papafragas Beaches

The two side-by-side beaches are both some of the most beautiful spots on the island, due to the rock formations that have made the shore into smaller coves embraced by the rocks going into the water.

Kapros is easily visible from the road and is reachable by car, while its smaller neighbor Papafragas beach is only a small path away from Kapros.

If turquoise waters and small caves are your thing, don’t skip the opportunity to rent a car and visit these two beautiful beaches.

Villages

Mandrakia

The definition of a quaint fishing village, Mandrakia seems to have traveled through time to preserve the true lifestyle of locals from a different time. The traditional cycladic colors, the boats and fishing gear, the mindblowing “syrmata”, doors in the rocks where locals saved their equipment or even small boats, are going to leave awe-struck.

Aside from many photogenic spots, Mandrakia offers pretty swimming spots and small tavern by the sea where you can enjoy local delicacies.

Fyropotamos

The village embraced by steep cliffs and unique rock formations is often confused with villages from the neighboring Kimolos, but in reality the difference is found truly in the imposing presence of the rocks.

Offering a magnificent golden hour view, it is an ideal place to visit during the evening to enjoy some dewy golds and dusky oranges spreading on the horizon.

The beautiful church of Agios Nikolaos nearby is also a must-visit spot right next to the village.

Klima

This small settlement of only 20 permanent residents has captured the attention of all visitors and for good reason. Very close to the village of Tripiti, Klima is, of course, a fishing village that was especially prevalent during the ancient times.

Its importance can be seen also in the ancient attractions that are found near it, like the Ancient Theater or the Catacombs of Milos, both great destinations for history buffs.

Nowadays a lot of the “syrmata” houses found in Klima have been turned into accommodation for visitors to offer that authentic experience of waking up right next to the water. The remote location and romantic view makes it the perfect place for couples as well.

Rent a Car and Make Your Visit Complete

If all of the above didn’t convince you, there will still be time on the island for you to rent even a few days before your visit, however we always advise you to book in advance to avoid being left with minimal to no options regarding what you are looking for.

Booking early also saves some of your budget, as last minute bookings are bound to be more costly than early bird ones, so think well and feel free to contact us with any of your questions or points of hesitation before renting a car in Milos!
